Outreach
Pursuing our mission to encourage and promote handweaving, we provide live demonstrations of weaving and spinning throughout the year for schools and community groups. Our members enjoy demonstrating felting, hand and loom weaving, and spinning on a wheel or drop spindle. Student participation is encouraged. Felting can be done at any age; some adult supervision is needed for preschoolers. By the age of seven, children usually have enough hand coordination for weaving and drop spindle spinning.
We demonstrate our craft annually at Hawaii State Art Museum's Second Saturday programs, as well as the annual Hawaiian Scottish Festival and Highland Games held at Ala Moana Park. We also periodically exhibit weaving and spinning in various locations on the Big Island, including Hilo Public Library and Kahilu Theatre in Waimea.
Contact us at info@hawaiihandweavers.org if you are interested in having our members weave and/or spin at your event. We will need at least 6 to 8 weeks to prepare.
