This weaving workshop is open to the public. It utilizes 4 and 8 shaft looms, and is appropriate for all skill levels. Participants must be able to set up a loom and understand the basics of plain weave. Hawaiʻi Handweavers' Hui members receive a discounted class fee. Those who wish to become members may click HERE to join before registering for the workshop.

Upon registering for the workshop, a detailed supply list and set up instructions will be emailed to the participant. If there are any questions regarding supply requirements before registering, please contact kamuelaweaver@gmail.com

In addition to registering, participants purchase necessary weaving supplies, and pay a $30 materials fee to the instructor at the workshop. Materials include three spiral-bound notebooks, a netting shuttle, and supplies for color wraps.

Big Isle participants must bring their own 4 or 8 shaft looms to the workshop. Loom set-up time is 8:00 am - 10:00 am on the first day, January 14, 2021.

Shared cabins at Kilauea Military Camp are available to participants. To reserve a space, please contact Jo Hittner at jhittner@winona.edu.

Rosalie Neilson uses color and geometric design in her weaving and kumihimo braiding. As a designer and teacher, she publishes regularly in weaving and braiding journals and maintains an active teaching schedule throughout the United States, Canada, and England.

Her published works include "The Thirty-Seven Interlacements of Hira Kara Gumi," "The Twenty-Four Interlacements of Edo Yatsu Gumi," "Kongō Gumi: A Cacophony of Spots—CoilsZags—Lines," and "An Exaltation of Blocks." In addition she is featured in a 2-hour rep weave video by Interweave Press (now owned by Long Thread Media). www.rosalieneilson.com

Explore the multitude of designs possible in warp-faced rep by using two different colorways and two different weights of weft. Learn an easy way to tie a wide warp onto the front cloth beam rod, in addition to a versatile treadling method to maximize the number of patterns. Discussions will focus on color, movement of blocks, skeleton tie-ups, and threading systems.

Drafts for 4- and 8-shaft looms will be sent in advance, along with color suggestions for the two different colorways of pattern and background. (Preliminary information will be sent via email). Weavers will warp and thread their looms prior to the workshop and work exclusively on their own loom throughout the 3-day workshop. Weavers will also learn the Cavandoli knot and participate in a color wrap session.
