Kumihimo (Hawaiʻi Island class)

Join us for Kumihimo with Joan Namkoong

Kumihimo is the Japanese art of braiding. In this class you will learn to braid on a marudai (round stand) using 8 tama (bobbins) moved in sequence to create simple, beautiful braids to be used in multiple ways. Students will learn about the equipment, how to secure and wind a bobbin with thread, how to balance the bobbins with a counterweight, how to read a pattern and how to move the bobbins in rhythmic repetition. All equipment and supplies will be provided.

This class is open to adults. Minors ages 12-17 may take the class but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Both parent and child must register and pay the fee. If you are interested in taking the class with your child, please register online for yourself and your child as a guest. Those registering for a Hawaii Handweavers Hui class may add one guest based on availability.

What to bring:

• Small scissors
• 1 chopstick
• Snack and beverage if you wish 
• Your own marudai/tama/counterweight (optional)

Instructor Bio:

Joan Namkoong is a Waimea based weaver who weaves cloth on a multi shaft floor loom. She has created cords with Kumihimo for many years and enjoys the rhythmic motion of braiding silk on a marudai.

We require a minimum of three participants for each class. A full refund will be issued to those registered, if class is cancelled by Hawaiʻi Handweavers’ Hui. Refunds for class registration cancellation by participant will be issued in full only if the cancellation is made more than 14 days before the class begins.
