PROSPECTUS

This is a non conventional exhibition, tailored to the gallery style of the Pauahi Mezzanine, that will last for six months! All pieces must be presented in a frame fashion, ready to be hung. Fiber arts include loom and non loom creations decorated with your unique style of expression. Your lavish canvas may be composed of multi fibers, woven samples, paper, pet's hair, beads, metals, etc., and may be sewn, patched, patterned, painted, felted, or simply woven. The art piece should have some woven elements. The finished framing should be a minimum of 20 inches in width with no height restriction.

Juror Sara Oka

Recently retired Curator of Textiles for the Honolulu Museum of Art, Sara Oka has curated numerous textile exhibitions from the collection, and coordinated traveling exhibitions and loans, including the impressive display of skirt textiles, Gather Around, on view at HoMA through February 2, 2020.

Statement

Textiles have an ability to connect with so many audiences and viewers because of the familiarity textiles provide. From body adornment to home embellishments, from ceremonial, religious and festival applications, fibers take center stage in so many aspects of our lives.This challenge to frame, both figuratively and literally, provides a new context and opportunity to showcase how fibers are presented. How will this affect how we perceive these works? Will it alter the artistic integrity, techniques, narratives, craftsmanship, or will it accentuate boundaries - physically, politically, culturally, emotionally? Looking forward to the creativity this will provide, both for the artist and the community as well.
